Coalport China began in 1795 in Shropshire, England, founded by John Rose, a former apprentice of the famed Caughley porcelain works. Nestled near the Ironbridge Gorge—cradle of the Industrial Revolution—Coalport quickly rose to prominence by combining artistic elegance with technical innovation. Known for richly decorated bone china, Coalport’s intricate hand-painted designs and gilding attracted aristocratic and royal patrons alike.
In the 19th century, Coalport pioneered new techniques, including raised paste gilding and exotic enamel work, rivaling top European makers like Meissen and Sèvres. Their pieces adorned royal courts and were showcased at international exhibitions, including the Great Exhibition of 1851.
By the early 20th century, Coalport became synonymous with refined English porcelain. In 1967, it joined the Wedgwood group, ensuring its legacy continued. Today, antique Coalport remains highly collectible, cherished for its craftsmanship, vibrant patterns, and glimpse into Georgian and Victorian opulence.
Coalport isn’t just china—it’s a slice of British history, molded in porcelain.
