J & G Meakin, a celebrated name in English pottery, was founded in 1851 in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent—the heart of England’s ceramic industry. Renowned for producing affordable yet stylish ironstone china, the company quickly gained popularity both domestically and internationally. Their designs reflected changing tastes, from elegant Victorian florals to sleek mid-century modern patterns.
By the early 20th century, J & G Meakin had become a household name, exporting vast quantities of tableware to Australia, Canada, and the U.S. During the 1950s and '60s, they embraced bold, contemporary styles like “Impact” and “Topic,” capturing the spirit of postwar design.
In 1968, J & G Meakin merged with Johnson Brothers, later becoming part of the Wedgwood Group. Production at the original factory continued until the early 2000s. Though no longer in operation, J & G Meakin’s legacy lives on through collectors and vintage enthusiasts who prize their durable craftsmanship and iconic patterns. Their story is one of innovation, adaptation, and timeless appeal—a true reflection of Britain’s pottery heritage.
