Portmeirion Pottery began in 1960, when Susan Williams-Ellis, daughter of Portmeirion Village founder Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, took over a small pottery business in Stoke-on-Trent. Driven by a bold artistic vision, she transformed it into a design icon. Her breakout moment came with the launch of the Botanic Garden collection in 1972—dinnerware adorned with vivid floral illustrations, each scientifically labeled, inspired by antique botanical books. It broke conventions of the time by blending beauty with everyday durability, making fine design accessible.
Portmeirion pottery quickly became a household name, merging art and functionality in a way that felt both timeless and modern. Its designs, often eclectic and nature-inspired, still reflect Susan’s fearless creativity. Today, the brand continues to thrive, having acquired iconic names like Spode and Royal Worcester, yet it remains true to its roots—celebrating nature, imagination, and bold British design.
